Composite Fillings
Composite fillings; they are resin-based materials used to repair the loss of substance in the teeth due to caries, cracks, fractures and to reshape the teeth. These materials, also known as aesthetic fillings, white fillings, and light fillings among the people, are frequently used by dentists due to their color options and light transmittance resembling natural teeth. Composite fillings, which are highly resistant to chewing forces, can be used easily in every patient and every tooth.
Composite fillings can be applied for aesthetic purposes apart from repairing the loss of substance in the teeth. Elimination of gaps in split teeth and providing symmetry in unsymmetrical anterior teeth are also possible with composite fillings. It is very difficult to distinguish a well-made composite filling from a natural tooth.
Although it is possible to see color change with the consumption of dyes such as tea, coffee and cigarettes, this situation can be prevented for a long time with a well-made polish.
ADVANTAGES OF COMPOSITE FILLING
- Provides an aesthetic solution thanks to its color options and light transmittance.
- Since there are different types for anterior and posterior teeth, they can be used easily in every tooth.
- It is quite economical compared to porcelain fillings.
- They are highly resistant to breakage in small and medium-sized fillings.
- They provide very good resistance to chewing forces.
HOW IS COMPOSITE FILLING DONE?
The procedures are performed under local anesthesia by numbing only the relevant tooth. First of all, the damaged and decayed areas of the tooth are cleaned. The resulting gap is shaped to give the composite filling the necessary resistance and strength. After the acid etching process, a special adhesive is applied to the cavity and this adhesive is activated with blue light. Afterwards, the composite filling placed in the cavity is shaped according to the tooth and blue light is applied again. The blue light used makes the composite filling reach the desired hardness. After the repaired tooth is harmonized with the opposing and neighboring teeth, polishing processes are applied and the composite filling treatment is completed.
Although there is no pain during the procedure, it may be possible to experience some sensitivity after the procedure in deep caries. However, this situation is observed for a temporary period.
